Self Promotion, Getting Picked and “The One Thing”

Ken Bator and I were recently at the 10th Annual Police Officers’ Credit Union Conference when he asked the audience what the “one thing” is that they would like to get out of the day; what’s the major takeaway that will resonate after weeks, months, or even years later?

A couple days later I was catching up on Seth Godin’s blog and found a post about “getting picked” – which essentially talked about waiting for people to pick you to advance your career versus creating your own path for success. Thinking this was an excellent discussion topic I posted it in a couple LinkedIn Groups and some wonderful conversations began taking place. Read the LinkedIn Discussion.

What’s the link between the “one thing” and “getting picked”, you ask? Well, creating your own path to success has much to do with self-promotion, and great self-promotion should focus on YOUR “one thing” – that one special quality, trait, characteristic, strength, etc. that sets you aside from the pack. What are people going to remember about YOU a week, month, or years later? If you don’t know the answer then how do you think others will perceive you? What’s your lasting impression?

Self promotion is hard! It can come off as braggadocious, self-centered, and down – right awkward, right? Maybe. But once you get the hang of it you can let your sincerity shine through and it will come off as confident, proud and honest.
For those of us who may find it challenging to self promote, really focus on your “one thing.” Of course you have many more than one great thing about you, but focusing on the one that you feel passionately about and makes you unique and valuable will be a self promotion home run!

So how do you choose your “one thing”? What if you choose the wrong one? Or focus on one that no one cares about? Relax. You’re going to take a poll of the people you know, like and trust. Simply ask them to finish this sentence:

“The one thing I most admire about you is your ability to __________________________.”

Getting others opinions is highly useful, as we spend a lot of time in our own heads and need others to help clear through the forests of our thoughts. Use these comments as your guide to choosing your perfect “one thing” and then get out there and self promote with ease and confidence!

    Love your article! It is definitely hard to “sell” yourself if you are trying to do it with the “hard sell” that usually comes to mind. However, when you do as you suggest and simply keep doing the “one thing” that sets you apart, you don’t have to hard sell. People will remember you.
